A lot of changes going on at this time of year. Graduations, birthdays, etc. I was talking to my daughter last night about how much we wish we could go back. So, obviously, I had to write a poem about the passage of time. I used the villanelle form, and if there’s one thing I’ve noticed about villanelle, it can end up not saying exactly what you meant it to, but still something valid.
Just Watch
By Michelle Garren-Flye
Mark the days, the weeks, the hours
on the timepiece that you choose;
I’ll make an impression that empowers.
The path before us flowers
and I am tempted to just cruise,
but mark the days, the weeks, the hours.
Sweet youth rapidly sours;
that’s one of life’s divine truths,
so make an impression that empowers.
Fate before us towers.
Fighting it is no use.
Mark the days, the weeks, the hours.
Look on as time devours,
listen to the wisdom of the muse:
make an impression that empowers.
If you wish to bathe in showers
of what you know don’t want to lose,
then mark the days, the weeks, the hours
to make an impression that empowers.
